Instructions on .mw ccTLD

  1. REGISTERING A NEW DOMAIN:
SDNP has now accredited many registrars that you can use to register a .mw domain, see list at http://www.nic.mw. SDNP will in the near future only be running the .mw registry and not be a registrar at the same time. SDNP is hence is encouraging you to now register your new domain with another registrar that you can choose from the list.

However, if you still want to register your domain with SDNP_registrar during this transition period then you may proceed to click REGISTER and enter your details on the registration form or template that appears or on the template that you download. We strongly recommend that you carry out a search here on the domain you desire before you proceed to request such a new domain. You can also use this site to register a new domain under some second levels of .mw such as .co.mw, .org.mw etc (see full list below) by clicking REGISTER. You will be asked by e-mail to confirm any request for a new domain. Confirmation is required. For further details read the information that follows.

  1. INVOICES:
Our system will send you an invoice when you register your new domain on SDNP_registrar or automatically charge it to your registrar.

The registry will send you notices when your domain is due for renewal whether you are using SDNP_registrar or another registrar. Please use the notices to request an invoice from your registrar or make a payment online with your registrar.

  1. MODIFYING A DOMAIN:
Only the corresponding Administrative Contact or the Technical Contact should modify a domain, submit your request through your registrar.

  1. DELETING A DOMAIN:
Only the corresponding Registrant and/or Administrative Contact should request deletion of a domain, submit your request through your registrar.

  1. DOMAIN BEING REQUESTED:
The domain being requested must satisfy the requirements in the Domain Registration Policy. The .mw registry also handles registration for some second level domains including .org.mw, .co.mw, .net.mw, .edu.mw, .ac.mw, etc as shown in the Domain Registration Policy.

  1. REGISTER DOMAIN TO: REGISTRANT
A registrant contact is required in registering a new domain. You need to specify name and contact details of the entity or organization that is being represented by the domain name being requested. This should be the name of the organization OR registrant that will be using the Domain Name.
As modifying this section usually leads to re-delegation or transfer of a domain, such modification should only be done following a verifiable signed letter or proper authentication.

  1. DESCRIPTION OF PLAN FOR THE DOMAIN:
This is required in registering a new domain or modifying an existing domain. In the registration form, please describe in a sentence the intended use of the domain name being requested for registration.

  1. ADMINISTRATIVE CONTACT
The Administrative Contact is the contact point for administrative and policy questions about the domain. He/she must be an employee of the organisation/company that the domain is registered to. Putting in an administrative contact is highly recommended but optional.

  1. TECHNICAL CONTACT
The technical contact handles the technical aspects of maintaining the domain's name server, resolver software, and database files. S/he keeps the name server running. The person must be knowledgeable and competent on technical issues, especially with the Internet Domain Name System (DNS).This is a requirement for every domain that needs to be generated in the DNS.

  1. PRIMARY NAME SERVER
The primary name server is the computer that runs the primary DNS services for the domain. The complete host name of the primary server is required.
Note: The server must be up and running before submitting an application.
Domains must have at least two independent servers; primary and secondary, that provide the DNS service for translating names to addresses for hosts in this domain. Establishing the servers in physically separate locations and on different physically separate networks is strongly recommended in order to run a reliable service.
HELP: Nameservers are available to serve your domain.

  1. SECONDARY NAME SERVER
The complete host name of the secondary server is required. Make sure the server is up and running before submitting an application.
HELP: Nameservers are available to serve your domain.

  1. CHOOSING A SECOND LEVEL DOMAIN
You may register a new domain under any of the following second levels:
ac.mw - recommended for academic institutions
co.mw - recommeneded for commercial organisations
com.mw - an alternative for commercial organisations
coop.mw - suitable for cooperative associations
edu.mw - suitable for degree granting academic institutions
gov.mw - restricted to government preferably Malawi Government
int.mw - suitable for international treaty organisations
net.mw - suitable for networking organisations
    org.mw - suitable for non-profit making organisations

  1. BILLING CONTACT Invoices for domains are normally sent to the Billing Contact if one is supplied. Details on how to make payments are included on the invoice. Domain registration is operated on a prepaid basis and domains will be marked as expired if payment that is due has not been paid. Domains that have expired for longer than 30 days become due for deletion from the registry and become due for disconnection from the DNS.

  1. USERNAME AND PASSWORD
When registering a new domain, you need to choose secure username and password at your registrar that will facilitate you to login later and be able to modify or edit your domain record. You should pick and use unique login details for each domain. You can use the Forgot Passwd facility if available at your registrar to reclaim these at any time you choose, hence there is no real need to remember them. Use of the same username and password for more than one domain may cause conflicts which may render you unable to edit your domain record. The registrar can help to update your login details.
